Characteristics and application: 42CrMo steel belongs to ultra-high strength steel, with high strength and toughness, good hardenability, no obvious tempering brittleness, small deformation during quenching, high fatigue limit and multiple impact resistance after quenching and tempering, good impact toughness at low temperature, and high creep strength and endurance strength at high temperature. Generally used after quenching and tempering, it can replace quenched and tempered steel with high nickel content. The surface quenching after quenching and tempering is usually used as the heat treatment scheme for this steel. It is used to manufacture important parts with higher requirements or larger section size than 35CrMo steel, such as big gear for locomotive traction, supercharger transmission gear, rear axle, gearbox gear, engine cylinder, connecting rod under heavy load, spring clamp, drill pipe joint and fishing tool for 1200~2000m deep oil well, etc. The steel is also suitable for manufacturing large and medium-sized plastic moulds requiring certain strength and toughness. 42CrMo steel can obtain a wide range of properties through various heating methods. 42CrMo steel material can resist creep at 538 ° C (1000 ° F) high temperature, and can maintain its properties even if exposed for a long time at relatively high working temperature 42CrMo steel has good cutting performance. Suitable for drilling, sawing, broaching, tapping, milling and other processing. However, 42CrMo steel material is not easy to weld. 42CrMo steel is not recommended to be welded in quenched and tempered (QT) state.
