Manhole Covers Brooklyn | Ephemeral New York

Manhole mysteries usually involve the ironworks company that made the cover—who worked there, how long they operated. But this time, I’m curious about the abbreviation on a sewer cover found in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

“Sewer B.R.” the cover reads. Okay, but what’s the B.R.—Brooklyn Railroad? Borough something? I’m unsure of how old this sewer cover is, but possibly it goes back to when Brooklyn was a separate city. Cast Iron Pipes And Fittings

Or perhaps it’s just an old-school way of abbreviating Brooklyn?

Curiously, I have an image of another “Sewer B.R.” cover from years ago that was found in Upper Manhattan. The design on the front is very different, but the B.R. mystery remains unsolved.
