Here’s what to look out for in this week's BBB Buyer Beware.

Between losing those extra Christmas pounds and New Year’s resolutions, January is the busiest month for the personal training and exercise industry.

It's also the perfect time for people to find out getting home exercise equipment, new or used, isn't as clear cut as buying clothes or shoes.

“Any third-party seller or any business should let you test the equipment before you walk out the door,” said Amie Mitchell, President and CEO of the BBB of Eastern Oklahoma.

She says it's ok to be picky especially if buying used.

Not all gym equipment may be right for you. You need to consider machines that your body can handle. Don't be afraid to ask for an in-store test of the equipment.

And with many people trying to lose weight this time of year, be extremely cautious of products that are being sold as helping you lose weight quicker or faster than traditional methods.

“Unfortunately with weight loss and your body there are things that you have to do. Are there products that can maybe assist you with losing a bit quicker or gaining some muscle mass? Absolutely, but the thing is you're going to have to do something,” Mitchell said. “Whether it be modify your diet or exercise in order for that product to work, and any product that is promising a miracle or permanent weight loss is completely a scam.”

The BBB advises you to also measure the dimensions of the room you will put any equipment in, especially large equipment. Sometimes once a big machine is put together, it will be harder to return not only because it's multiple heavy parts, but it may lose value when you open the box and it is considered used.

You could also see extra costs add up in delivery and product assembly fees.

Ask and double check all terms and conditions of sale including what happens if you need to make a return or if there is a warranty.

Check product reviews for any problems other customers are having that the store may not disclose.

Try to set a budget.

If you are spending more than you have, be careful of in-store financing. Some of this stuff is expensive, and you could end up paying more for the product if you agree to a payoff plan with high interest.

Before you make any purchase on any gym equipment new or used, be confident in the final terms of the sale. Any doubts you have now could lead to problems later and questions you may not like the answers to.

Email notifications are only sent once a day, and only if there are new matching items.
