Bulk Barn to open Campbell River store - Campbell River Mirror

Bulk Barn will be opening a new store in Campbell River on Friday, Oct. 13.

“We’re excited about Campbell River,” said Jason Ofield, president and CEO of Bulk Barn Foods Limited. “We believe that it’s the right market for us, we believe the combination of the location and the Tyee Plaza, with the mix of tenants, along with the size of the market, the population base, and the demographics in that market, provide us with a wonderful opportunity to open our store and provide our customer base with a wonderful shopping experience. So we’re really looking forward to that.” Wine Glass Gift Box

The Campbell River Bulk Barn will be the sixth outlet on Vancouver Island since opening its first one in Langford.

“We’ve seen wonderful success on the Island,” Ofield said.

The company will be running a number of promotions around the opening date in an effort to introduce the bulk foods and other items the retailer offers.

Bulk Barn is Canada’s largest bulk food retailer, Ofield said. The company offers a selection of products at competitive prices in many different categories: snacking and baking nuts, chocolates and baking chocolates, flours for baking, greens candy, health food as well as a selection of non-food baking items like cake pans that people rent or buy, and cake boxes and cake boards.

“And we even sell pinatas,” Ofield said. “We’ve got a great selection of pinatas for birthday parties and other fun gatherings that people can take advantage of.”

The value of a bulk store is that people can come in and buy as much or as little as they want.

“A pinch to a pound,” Ofield said. “And especially in today’s marketplace, when you look at (these) economic times and the cost of living that continues to increase. Any individual that’s looking to save money can come into our store and they can buy exactly what they need versus these prepackaged amounts that you would have to buy at the grocery store.”

A common indicator of whether a company should consider opening a store in Campbell River is how much their Comox Valley outlets are frequented by Campbell River customers.

“I will tell you a story,” Ofield said. “I was in Courtenay last week. And there was a couple in the store. And I walked down the aisle and I asked them if I could help them find anything. And they were buying some regular fruit mix because it’s that time of the year and they were going to do some baking. And they were an older couple.

“And they told me that they’ve been shopping in Bulk Barn for years back in Ontario. And they told me that they had actually moved to Campbell River recently. And then I obviously educated them that we had the Campbell River store opening in the near future. And they were very excited about that.”

The company also sees that in social media communication where a lot of people mention that they’re excited for the Campbell River opening, Ofield said.

The Campbell River Bulk Barn outlet will be just over 3,000 sq. ft. and will incorporate the company’s “modern branding’ with bright, modern and white interior with a fresh layout.
