Virtual reality visors and no windows: The future of air travel | Stuff.co.nz

Imagine travelling on a plane that seats 1000 passengers and has no windows.

Sound terrifying? It could be a reality by the year 2050.  Stretched Ultra Wide Bar Lcd Advertising Display

The radical concept plane has been drawn up by Airport Parking & Hotels and students at Imperial College London, and shows how windows could be replaced with live image projection screens, providing a view of the outside.

These screens could also display in-flight information and entertainment, or switch to relaxing scenes of starry skies when passengers want to sleep.

The designers predict that a blended-wing body design will be the next evolution of commercial aircraft, allowing more interior space for cargo, passengers and crew.

But the high capacity would not come at the expense of passenger comfort. The designers say with the extra interior space, there would be even more leg room, and people would be able to move around and socialise more freely while in flight.

There would also be a bar and lounge area where passengers could stretch their legs and get their own drinks and snacks.

Instead of traditional LCD screens on the back of seats, the in-flight entertainment system would come in the form of virtual reality visors, which passengers would wear over their heads to enjoy 3D movies and games.

These would be designed to automatically fold away on take-off and landing, or in an emergency.

The plane would run on low-emission biofuels, propelled by clusters of electric fans in a superconducting system.

Beverley Barden of Airport Parking & Hotels said: "Air travel has long been considered an uncomfortable way to begin a holiday.

"With these advances in passenger space, in-flight entertainment and extra room for bars and relaxation, this will finally be a thing of the past."
