Hyosung TNC announced on Sept. 7 that it has developed nylon for liners of hydrogen vehicle fuel tanks for the first time in Korea. A liner is an inner container of a fuel tank that prevents leaks.

The new nylon liner material is 70 percent lighter than metal materials and 50 percent lighter than high-density polyethylene (HDPE) materials. Its gas blocking power is also 30 percent higher than that of metal materials and 50 percent higher than that of HDPE materials. LDPE Geomembrane Liner

Metal liners are heavy. Their risk of brittleness increases when they are exposed to hydrogen for a long period of time. Liners made of nylon have low hydrogen absorption and air permeability, so they are free from the risk of brittleness, the company explains. Moreover, hydrogen container liners must withstand a sudden and big change in temperature caused by a frequent charging and discharging of hydrogen. Nylon liners have excellent impact resistance against big temperature changes and can withstand temperatures ranging from -40 ℃ to 85 ℃.
