We asked kitchen expert Fiona Mair from consumer advocacy group CHOICE what our pots and pans should be made of.

"Having a selection of all the cookware materials allows you to have the option to cook a variety of dishes," says Ms Mair, based in Sydney.

"When people start out buying cookware, cookware sets might seem a cheaper option, offering a number of pieces that you may not use.

"However, it is more practical to buy individual pieces with different materials for different types of cooking."
