The high-voltage PECO line broke and landed on the sidewalk outside of the building.
The downed line caused a power surge that burned a hole in the sidewalk, stucco wall, and did “extensive damage” to the incoming electrical service, Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito said.
Readers said the downed wire was sparking and smoking when it hit the ground.
Additionally, the power power surge blew multiple holes in water pipes in the basement of the building, Dippolito said.
Six apartments and Giovanni Dillicious Pickles were impacted by the downed line and surge.
The fire marshal said the six apartments had to be temporarily evacuated, and the American Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing for three of the residents.
Dog and Bull Brew and Music House had customers in their business at the time and evacuated everyone following the incident. The eatery and watering hole closed early and expected to reopen Tuesday morning.
Giovanni’s Dillicious Pickles posted on social media that they will be closed Tuesday due to the incident.
